World War II History for May 19

1926 - Benito Mussolini announced that democracy was deceased. Rome became a fascist state.

1937 - Adolf Hitler asked the Vatican to rebuke Chicago Cardinal Mundelein for his criticism of the Nazis.

1943 - Winston Churchill told the U.S. Congress that his country was pledging their full support in the war against Japan.

1944 - 59 Italian resistance fighters were massacred on a mountain pass above Genoa, Italy. On July 5, 2002, Nazi SS officer Friedrich Engel was convicted of murder for the massacre. He was sentenced to seven years but was spared jail time due to his age (93).
