Timeline Event:

Aug 17, 1942

US Marine Raiders, led by Lt Col Evans E. Carlson, were landed on Makin Islands in the Gilbert Islands by two Navy submarines. The 221-man force destroyed all installations, including the newly completed seaplane base, on the Japanese-held island and killed the entire Japanese garrison of about 90 men. The Japanese commander's last radio message was "All men are dying serenely in battle." "Carlson's Raiders" lost 30 men and 14 were wounded.
