Timeline Event:

Sep 17, 1939

The British fleet carrier Courageous was sunk in the Western Approaches, off southwestern Ireland, by German U-Boat U-29 while on antisubmarine duty, the first Royal Navy ship lost in the war. More than 500 men were killed. The immediate effect was the British pulling all their fleet carriers out of antisubmarine operations.
