Timeline Event:


Dec 10, 1941

A PBY from (VP 101), piloted by Lieutenant Harmon T. Utter, was attacked by three Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2 Type 0 carrier fighters (ZERO). Chief Boatswain Earl D. Payne, Utter’s bow gunner, shot down one, scoring the U.S. Navy’s first verifiable air-to-air "kill" of a Japanese plane in the Pacific War.
