Timeline Event:


Apr 28, 1942

The US Navy’s Task Force 99, which consisted of USS Washington (BB 56), USS Tuscaloosa (CA 37) and USS Wichita (CA 45), with four destroyers sailed from the Royal Navy base at Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, as part of the mixed U.S.-British focre (Force “Distaff”). The British fleet units included battleship HMS King George V, carrier HMS Victorious, light cruiser HMS Kenya, and five destroyers. The force steamed to the waters northeast of Iceland to provide cover for Russian convoy PQ-15, sailing to Murmansk, Russia.
